Was it a good thing or a bad thing that he couldn't feel his legs? Was it a good thing or a bad thing that didn't know where he was? Was it a good thing or a bad thing that he was all alone?

It was a bad thing. Especially the part about being alone because he didn't think he should be, and he couldn't remember why. Technically, he did know where he was. He was in a river twenty feet from the shoreline, soaked to the skin, aching all over, cold, and with a splitting headache. Unfortunately, he didn't know *what* river or *what* shoreline--and he still couldn't feel his legs.

Daniel stuck a finger in one ear and placed the phone over the other. “Hello?” he mumbled over the din in his living room and a mouthful of cookie.

“Hey,” said a familiar voice on the other end of the phone.

“Jack!” Daniel smiled. “Hey, yourself. And Merry Christmas.” He swallowed and cleared his throat.

“You too,” Jack said over the noise on his end. “What kind did she make?”

No matter how you look at it, it's been a terrible day. I'm tired, I'm frustrated, and I've worked until I can't see the computer screen in front of me. To top it all off, Jack just called from Washington. He's coming into town for our annual shopping trip with Cassie. We take her out each year to go back-to-school shopping. We did it the first time the year after Janet died because we needed Cassie to know someone was there for her, and because we needed to be with her. We'd gone for lunch, picked up the requisite notebooks and pencils, folders with cartoon characters on them, and a brand new pair of shoes. I don't know why, but for some reason Janet always bought Cassie new shoes for the first day of school, and that first year we kept the tradition alive even at the cost of some tears on Cassie's part, and Sam's, and mine. It ended up being a great day, one we've repeated every year since.

Somewhere, Daniel thought, there must be a list of the top ten stupidest ways to die. Somewhere. There's a list for almost everything: the top ten places to go on vacation, the top ten best places to live, the top ten restaurants, the top ten best-selling books. He gave a little laugh, then winced as pain shot through his ribs. Damn!

“Teal'c seems pretty quiet,” Daniel said, his voice soft and rough. He walked beside Jack who was at the back of the pack watching their six. Sam, a few feet ahead of them, and Teal'c, on point, were far enough ahead that Daniel didn't think he could be overheard. “I'm kind of worried about him.”

Jack looked at the straight back of the man setting a brisk pace. As far as he could tell, Teal'c was always quiet. He didn't think he'd heard Teal'c put together more than a few sentences in a row in the four years he'd been on the team. “You're kidding, right?'” Jack asked.
